Police End 48-Hour Rooftop Standoff After Suspect Naps

A 48-hour rooftop standoff in Salford ended not with force but with a nap. Greater Manchester Police climbed a ladder and arrested the suspect after he dozed off on a porch roof. It was, as one headline put it, a "roof awakening".

A two-day wait below

According to Greater Manchester Police, the incident began on Thursday and dragged on for two days. During that time, the 37-year-old suspect assaulted emergency responders, and a cordon was put up. One nearby householder had to be evacuated for their own safety.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the man had thrown tiles from the roof at one point. He was later charged with two counts of assault, burglary for stealing T-shirts and rum punch, intentionally causing a public nuisance by sitting on a roof, and two counts of criminal damage.

"I would like to reiterate my thanks to the people of Salford for their patience and understanding." — Detective Chief Inspector Helen Bagnall

The ladder moment

On Saturday, August 15, the suspect fell asleep on the porch. Officers placed a ladder against the roof, and one climbed up and grabbed him by the trousers. He was arrested without further drama.

Some details, including the reported tile-throwing and the evacuated neighbour, come from local reporting rather than the police statement, and have not been independently confirmed.

What do you think finally tipped this standoff — exhaustion, luck, or something else?
